Company is Coming
As Elizabeth points out in her post, the web series Gayle is a excellent use of exaggeration humor. The character of Gayle behaves in an exaggerated stereotypical suburban mom fashion. Lines such as "there can be no sign of living in this house!" take the urgent attitude of cleanliness to an extreme. Irony can be seen in this clip as well because after all the fuss Gayle has made over the house, she leaves it messier to begin with after dropping dish towels and throwing pillows. The quick succession of shots in different angles and shaky camera add to the chaos that makes this video so funny.
Incongruity theory can be seen in this clip because it is unexpected for a "mom" character to be acting in such a frantic way. It is also incongruous because a stereotypical suburban mom is expected to be good at cleaning, which Gayle is definitely not. As Elizabeth also pointed out, it is humorous when Gayle's voice goes deeper, because she is portrayed by a man. This is incongruity theory at work because you expect a woman's voice to get higher in pitch when she is frustrated or upset.
I think the Gayle web series can be considered a satire of stereotypical suburban moms. This clip in particular uses exaggeration and irony to make fun of how much these moms care about their home's reputation to their guests.

I like how you said that the different angles and shaky camera add to the humor. Humor is not just in what we say or how we say it, but it can be funny by the context. This video would have still been funny without the shaky camera, but it added to the experience to make it more humorous.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that the shaky camera angles add to the clip. The video would still be funny without it but it adds experience like Rebecca said. I also agree that there was Irony in this video. This made the video humorous because Gayle left the house messier than it was before.
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely a satirical portrait for sure. How do you think having a man do the part plays into this effect?
